- Britannica Online -- You'll have to pay to use this beyond a brief free trial. But it is the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
- Or try the Britannica Sample Search, which allows free searches, but only lets you see the first paragraph of articles. (This can be a very handy way to locate information if you have access to a printed Britannica.)
- FREE Internet Encyclopedia -- An ambitious project to organize information on the Web in encyclopedic fashion.
- WWWebster Dictionary -- Merrian-Webster's
Collegiate Dictionary online.
- Hypertext Webster Interface, another
approach to an online dictionary. Also here.
- WebDictionary Not
really a dictionary, this is an index to information available on the Web.
- MapQuest! -- Home page links to interactive atlas and travel planner.
- The World Factbook -- The CIA's guide to nations of the world.
- Notable Citizens of Planet Earth -- A biographical dictionary. Short on detail, but plenty of useful basic information.
- MedicineNet Home Page -- A good source of medical information.
- Knowledge Adventure, Inc. -- An elementary reference library, including an encyclopedia, for children.
- Encyclopedia Smithsonian -- a short but growing collection of frequently asked questions about all sorts of subjects, from the Smithsonian Institution.
- The Distinctionary -- Not quite a dictionary or thesaurus, this is a collection of synonomies: discussions of the subtle differences between words of similar meaning.
- On-Line English Grammar -- A guide to grammar and punctuation.
- Michael Moncur's quotations page -- Search the quotation database, or grab a random quote.
- The Calendar Zone -- Links to all manner of calendrical information.
- Greek mythology -- an online guide to the Olympians.
- Background Briefing -- Historical background and a substantial helping of opinion on the causes and origins of current news stories.
- Unit Conversions -- A mind-bogglingly complete engine for conversion of weights and measures.
- Conversion Table -- Another tool for converting weights and measures. Also includes some software links.
